Description

The vineyard of only 10 hectares is located in Gualtallary at an altitude of 1250 m above sea level. Its alluvial soil structure is sandy, stony, deposited on a subsoil of calcareous sediments.

The 10 years old vineyard is planted with a non-grafted Malbec variety, we have chosen a particular variety: the “Gualtallary massal selection”. These certified Argentinean clonal Malbec plants come from the research and selection of old Malbec vineyards carried out by the Mercier nursery. The vineyard is planted in PIE FRANCO system, with 5.000 feet per hectare.

It is also managed without pesticides or agrochemicals. The limited yields that our winery imposes on its vineyards, thanks to the practice of careful pruning, allow the selected grapes to retain a high concentration of tannins and to display particularly generous aromas of red fruits and spices.

Harvesting is manual and irrigation is sustainable, in addition to drop irrigation – water from the thawing of the Cordillera – we carry out permanent monitoring (analysis with sensors of the absorption capacity of the soil, measurement of wind erosion and other parameters – more than 30 – monitored by satellite) to adapt the frequency of irrigation to the specific needs of these plants which, because they are not grafted, require greater care.

We do not have anti-hail netting.

Vineyard

The vineyard is also divided into individual lots which are harvested separately in order to perfectly control the development and ripeness of the grapes in each plot, which is why we harvest by hand and in a staggered manner in order to select each berry at its best point of ripeness. The Hedera wine comes from a plot called C1, as it receives more water than the other plots, due to the force of gravity, the grapes from this plot have less concentration than the neighbouring ones.

Winemaking

Hedera is a Malbec rosé press wine, hand harvested at the end of February 2020.  Made with a very light pressing, no tartaric acid is added. We look for the expression of the fruit without the acidity coming from very early harvests and we also want to avoid the artificial acidity of the added acids.

We can characterise it as a gastronomic rosé whose particularity is that it can be tasted at room temperature or chilled. Excessive cold would cause it to lose its best organoleptic characteristics. It is a limited production of 2000 bottles.
